Breakthrough
This work seeks to express my response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
'Breakthrough' uses its base of rough clay, with jagged edges and dark decoration, to visually harness the difficulties and tensions.
The porcelain swirl unfolding upwards and out of the darkness is a metaphor for the human spirit, with its perseverance and hope, as it rises from the place of containment to emerge into freedom.
Crystalline glazing conveys mystical and spiritual aspects in all of this, far beyond words.
We view 'Breakthrough' through a pane of glass (the connection will be obvious...), and the entire piece rests on oak, symbolic of strength and endurance.
